Amla (indiano uva spina / phyllanthus emblica) è un albero perenne a piccole e medie dimensioni con fiori finemente pinnati. I suoi frutti di dimensioni di tennis a palla da tennis verde raggiungono la piena maturità in autunno e sono tradizionalmente raccolti a mano.
Nell'Ayurveda classica, l'uva spina indiana è considerato un frutto sacro attorno al quale molte storie si intrecciano.
